the UN is supposed to enforce/arbitrate world order.........therefore when NORTH KOREAN troops envaded South Korea, the UN (and USA) stepped in to assist the South Korean government to stem the invasion tide from North Korea. The many countries that fought against north Korea were members of the UN
A similar reason to the war in Vietnam. The war against communism. The US believed in the domino effect, in that if one country fell influence to communism, the neighboring countries would fall as well. Therefore, South Korea was supported by the US to promote capitalism, whilst North Korea was supported by China to promote communism.

In June, 1950, the North Korean army of Communist North Korea crossed the thirty-eighth parallel and attacked the Republic of Korean troops and the American Eighth Army and drove them to the toe of the Korean peninsula. President Truman responded immediately with American force and was able to win the UN vote for a "police action" in Korea because the Soviet Union's representative to the UN was absent. General MacArthur was put in command of the expedition. Truman was responding to the communist threat by following his policy of containment--not letting any communist forces take over any areas they had not already occupied.

The Korean War began when North Korean troops swept across the thirty-eighth parallel and quickly drove the troops of the Republic of Korea to the toe of the Korean peninsula. This was a test of the Truman Doctrine. President Truman had stationed American troops in South Korea and an American fleet was already in Korean waters. Thanks to the absence of the Soviet delegation at the United Nations, Truman got that body to sponsor a "police action" in Korea to push the North Koreans back across the thirty-eighth parallel. The US made up most of the "police" in Korea. During the next presidential campaign, the Republican candidate Eisenhower promised to go to Korea and end hostilities. Eisenhower won the election and before he was inaugurated he went to Korea. He threatened to use atomic weaponry to end the war. That was probably a bluff, but it convinced the North Koreans to end hostilities in July, 1953. Korea returned to its previous division at the thirty-eighth parallel. The war did prove to the communist nations that the US was willing to defend its policy of containment and prevent any spread of communism, any where on the planet.

The Korean War began when North Korea launched an invasion of South Korea. The US, its allies and the United Nations resolved that this military action required a response. With that said, the US Army and armed forces of other UN nations joined together to push back the North Korean invasion. The US expended the most troops and as a result lost almost 30,000 troops.
