When the Germans sank the the English luxury liner, Lusitania in the 1915, where American passengers were on board. Not really seeing as the Lusitania was sunk in 1915 and America didn't join the war until the 6th of April 1917. Economic interests contributed as well as the Zimmerman telegraph. It was unrestricted submarine warfare in general and not just the sinkin of the Lusitania but also the Arabic and Sussex. After the Lusitania was sunk, Germany stopped the unrestricted submarine warfare but in January 1917 they resumed it. Also Germany had tried to persuade Mexico to join world war I and attack the U.S. the sinking of the lusitania

The United States was never provoked to enter the War as they had initially wanted to stay in a state of isolationism but was rather led into it by the British. Hoping to gain the U.S. as an Ally the British Intelligence intercepted a telegram from Germany for hopes of support from Mexico to invade the U.S. The U.S. was then showed this but then President Wilson had remained neutral, he instead allowed the reformation of U.S. arms. It was then after seven U.S. merchant ship losses and the revelation of the telegram that Wilson called for War with Germany.

The final straw for the Americans when it came to a declaration of war was the Zimmermann Note. It was a message sent to Mexico by Germany promising German support if the Mexicans wanted to invade America to recapture California, New Mexico and other areas ceded to the US at the end of the Mexican-American War.

Evidence was found that Germany was trying to get Mexico to declare war on the USA. Also Germany announced they were going to resume unrestricted submarine warfare on civilian ships possibly carrying munitions to England and France.

The Germans would sink British ships carrying American citizens to America, and then they encouraged Mexico to invade America which led to the U.S. finally declaring war in 1917.
