The South decided to form their own type of government, their own type of money, everything. they decided to secede ( to withdraw voluntarily from a union) from the Union ( that is what the united states was called). There were many reasons for this move, but the main subject is slavery. The North wanted to stay free, but the south had their own things in mind. anyways, the south successfully broke away from the union.

The southern US states that were slave holding states were concerned that slavery would be either abolished or never be allowed in the new territories that had not reached Statehood.

The anti-slavery movement in the Northern States was a strong movement that believed slavery should be abolished. These anti-slavery organizations said it was immoral and wanted to halt its spread while the South said that without slaves they couldn't harvest their cotton and their economy would collapse.

The newly elected President Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and many members of the Republican Party were highly motivated people who wanted to abolish slavery.

Whatever Lincoln's personal beliefs were at the time, he had promised the South during his campaign for the presidency that slavery would be an issue only in the new US territories. He was firm in his message to the South that he had no intent to end slavery in the South.

Southerners did not believe Lincoln. Lincoln himself stated that a US President had no authority on his own to abolish slavery.

Eventually some states decided they didn't want to be part of the US any-more so they broke off and formed their own country, the Confederated States of America. The Confederation was never recognised as a country by the international community and the Union claimed that the successions were an act of rebellion. The Union's President Lincoln claimed he was willing to fight for 'federation property' and rejected calls for a treaty on the grounds that the Confederacy was not a real government. The Confederacy even offered to pay for the 'federation property' but that was rejected too.

Because of the nature of the split there were several Union forts in Southern territory, which compromised the Confederacy's security. Eventually the forts were stormed, starting the war on the 12th of April 1861.

The election of 1860 (Lincoln) and slavery got the north and south heated, but the incident that started the civil war was at Fort Sumter. The lower south seceded and attacked Fort Sumter (a federal fort), this was considered an act of war. Lincoln attacked back and then the rest of the south secedes and the civil war started

The civil war was fought from 1861-1865. It started after seven southern slave states declared their secession and formed the confederate states.
