New technology. Weapons which had never been used before were killing men by the thousands on both sides. Also, the 4 year stalemate due to trench warfare (neither side could get ahead of the other). Tactics were also outdated. An example of this was in the Battle of the Somme, where the generals sent waves and waves of men at walking speed to their inevitable death.

World War I was more destructive for several reason. One reason was the proliferation of long range artillery. The second was the wholesale use of the machine gun and the third was the German use of chemical warfare.

It was the first war to be what is known as a total war. A total war is a war that not only causes hardship on the battlefield, but also on the country fighting the war. This may include the bombing of enemy cities, another innovation in World War I due to the new use of the airplane for warfare, or just an increased economic strain on the people due to the high consumption of materials.

From the time of the Civil War and on, weapons became much more powerful very rapidly. That, combined with the fact that so many countries and soldiers were involved, would have been bad enough. However, the invention of new means of transportation (airplanes and submarines) made stealth bombing and the use of torpedoes possible, not only on soldiers, but on civilians as well.

If you had a war right now what would be the equivalent weapons of mass destruction as opposed to World War 2?

Really there is no comparison. WW2 was far more destructive than WW1 in terms of what 1 bullet did or 1 cannon shell or 1 air raid. And so technology progresses. There is a saying that if there is a 3rd world war the 4th will be fought with bows & arrows.....
