The US employed "Search and Destroy" tactics that resulted in the strategy of "Attriting the enemy" (A war of body counts). Find him and kill him where ever he was found. It was acceptable for the war that had to be fought; however, the geographics of the war zone (Fighting limited to South Vietnam only) didn't allow the US/Allies to be able to ISOLATE the battlefield (South Vietnam). Communist men & material continued to flow into South Vietnam; consequently we couldn't destroy them all, they just kept coming...it was a recipe for an endless war, so we had to leave. The only other alternative was to WIDEN the war to include the infiltration routes (Ho Chi Minh Trail) in the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia, a move that certainly would have angered the Communist Superpowers. To avoid that confrontation, we departed. The Korean War (1950-1953) was easily isolated, as Korea was a Peninsula, and the US Navy controlled the seas. Communist re-supply had to be from across the Red Chinese border, which we easily saturated with bombs. Korea lasted less than 3 years, and we successfully stopped the communists at the 38th Parallel, still in effect today.

The effectiveness vary from situation to situation. Overall, it has been proven quite effective in harassing the US troops' advancing. However, for taking over enemy positions,Vietcong still needs large scale frontal assaults.
In situation of Vietnam War, which the locals are fighting a larger technology advanced force, guerrilla tactics are most likely to be used. It can minimize the casualty, while still giving the enemy force frustration, then further wear the enemy down mentally and physically.
We've been seeing same syndrome in Iraq today.
