The Third Reich was defeated by an alliance of primarily four nations, England, France, Russia, and the United States (with help from Canada and Australia). Each of those four allied powers was therefore able to assume control over one of four sections of Germany. The Russian sector became the state of East Germany, and the English, French, and American sectors were later joined to become West Germany. The two Germanies eventually reunified in 1990.

Divide it in four parts, to be governed by Britain, the United States, the Soviets, and France
At the end of World War 2 Germany was conquered by the Allied powers and divided into four sections, one being under the control of France, one under the US, one under Great Britian, and one under Russia (the USSR). The differences in how the conquering nations ruled over their sections eventually lead to the break-up of Germany into East and West Germany during the Cold War, though they are now reunited.

Later it was divided into two sections, one for the Allied forces (Britain, America, France) and one section for the Soviet Union. Germany was reunited into one country in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
