There were two major events that took place after the US Civil War ended. One dramatic event was the assassination of US President Lincoln. The other historic event was the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. Both events were unique in that no US President had ever been assassinated up until Lincoln's killing, and Johnson was the first US President to be impeached.

After the US Civil War,the North's industrial base continued to grow. This brought several million European Immigrants the the major cities in the east, such as New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. In New York City, as an example, immigrant populations in 1850 skyrocketed to 1900.Some of these immigrants also traveled westward to major cities such as Chicago.

For Americans that were in the North when the war began, the war's aftermath saw hundreds of thousands of "Easterners" take advantage of Federal government programs to move westward to claim farmlands. The ever expanding US railroading industry helped this movement west.

Population shifts in the former Confederacy, were small compared to the booming Northern economy.
