the arch duke of Serbia (i believe) was assassinated in Russia since there was no UN or league of nations and just an ally systems when Serbia declared war on Russia Germany did as well. then France declared war on Germany. to get to France the Germans went throw Belgium which in the eyes of the British violated Belgium's neutrality. the u.s stated neutral and only joined because of the unrestricted submarine warfare on u.s. merchant ships and Zimmerman note"s which the Germans sent to Mexico asking to join there side of the war if the united states entered. the British intercepted this message and gave it to the Americans giving the united states congress a reason to declare war on Germany and her allies. itily was a german ally but switched sides half way through the war.
