Armistice Day was officially changed to Veteran's Day in 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation to make this change in the hopes of demonstrating that this is a day to pay tribute to veterans and thank them for their service.

In the United States, Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day and was first observed on November 11, 1919 to commemorate the armistice ending the hostilities of World War I that occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, French Time. The armistice had been signed six hours earlier. (WWI officially ended on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.)

In 1954, after both World War II and the Korean War, the name was officially changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all military personnel who had served in the US Military, past and present.
