The final executive order of the Emancipation Proclamation, only freed slaves in the areas of the Confederacy that had not already returned to Union/federal control by January 1863.

The thirteenth Amendment. abolished and outlawed slavery, throughout the US. It was ratified by 3/4 of the states in December of 1865, though it had passed both Houses, and was signed by President Lincoln, on February 1, 1865.

President Lincoln, in his role as "Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy," published two Executive Orders now known as "The Emancipation Proclamation"; the first was on September 22, 1862, and the second was on January 1, 1863. These Executive Orders declared all slaves in the Confederate States of America to be free. Of course this freedom was no more than a promise until the Armies of the CSA surrendered one-by-one.

Lincoln's Executive Orders did not end slavery in the Union states, however. Lincoln made the end of all U.S. slavery an important element in his campaign for re-election in 1864. Voters in Maryland and Missouri ended slavery there. Newly re-elected President Lincoln immediately pressed Congress to pass a Constitutional Amendment proposal, which was sent to all state legislatures in January 1865. Unfortunately Lincoln did not live to see the passage of this Thirteenth Amendment in December 1865, nor the official end of the Civil War declared by President Andrew Johnson on August 29, 1866.

Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation in 1886. This freed all slaves in the North, and since the slaves in the North were already free, the Emancipation Proclamation and Abraham Lincoln did nothing to free slaves.

Actually, as the union forces conquered parts of the southern states, the slaves became contraband of war, and were freed accordingly, as a result of the proclamation. If you were a slave living in reconquered territory, you were definitely affected by the proclamation.

Lincoln freed the slaves in the year 1863.In fact, Lincoln didn't free a single slave. He was very careful not to anger any slave owners in states friendly to the north by excluding those areas from the Emancipation Proclamation.

During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln announced the freeing of all slaves in the rebellious South in his famous Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863. Using the Battle of Antietam (considered by Northerners to be a Union victory) as his motivation, Lincoln's proclamation did not entirely end slavery in the United States, but it was a first, vitally important step toward doing so.

The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1963, which legally freed the slaves. However, the anniversary is celebrated on September 22 because that was the day the first proclamation was adopted by Lincoln.
