Technically, there were not two countries that fought during the American civil war (1861 - 1865). It was eleven southern states of the United States that attempted to secede from the union, and form their own country. The U.S. civil war was also known as the "War Between the States."

The North was fighting to preserve the nation and abolish slavery, therefore, it retained the name The United States of America (USA, aka "the Union"), while the South was fighting for independence, and the right to keep slavery legal. In March of 1861, seven states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas) had formed the Confederate States of America (CSA, aka "the Confederacy"), with Jefferson Davis elected as its president. In April of 1861 Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia joined the Confederacy.

Following a Union victory at the battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862), on January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, granting liberty to more than 3,000,000 slaves. Due to the ongoing civil war, slavery in the southern states was not actually abolished until the end of the war, and the enactment of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (1865).

On July 1st, 1863, one of the bloodiest battles of the civil war took place at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On July 4th, the Confederate Army began to retreat to Virginia. On November 19, 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered his now famous Gettysburg Address at Gettysburg National Cemetery - a speech to honor those who died in the battle at Gettysburg. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at a Appomattox Court House in southwestern Virginia.

The American Civil War was a horrific, bloody conflict that pit brother against brother, and resulted in the death of more than 620,000 Americans on U.S. soil. Although slavery had been abolished, and a nation reunited, it has taken decades to heal, and the attitudes about slavery and racial bigotry lingered well into the 20th century.
