Hitler moved to Munich, Germany from Vienna, Austria in 1913, after receiving the final payment from his father's estate. He later wrote (in Mein Kampf) that he had always considered himself to be a German and wanted to live in a "real" German city. However, the move also allowed Hitler to evade service in the Austrian military.

Hitler was so confident that he called a plebiscite 'vote' in which he cheated when German officials counted the votes, Hitler claimed that 99.75% of Austrian voters voted for the 'Anschluss' between Germany and Austria to be conducted. Hitler now had full power over Austria, had control over the whole Austrian army, and economic supplies such as iron and steel.
Technically, when WW 2 began, Austria no longer existed. After April 10, 1938, Austria became part of the German Third Reich. Austria ceased to exist.
The Berghof was totally destroyed by the Allies at the end of WW2, so as to not leave anything that could become a shrine to Hitler.
