The major cause of World War I was the fact that countries had secret alliances and rivalries. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, all of Austria-Hungary's allies joined in, and all of Serbia's allies joined in. The fact that there were so many alliances, a lot of countries were dragged into the war, creating a World War.

∙ 8y agoBecause of the alliances that existed between various groups of European countries. The dispute that started the war originally involved only Austria and Serbia. But the Serbs called upon their Russian allies, and the Russians were in turn allied with France. The Austrians were allied with Germany. The Germans were perpetually afraid of being attacked from both east (France) and west (Russia), and therefore preemptively attacked France, hoping to defeat her before Russia could concentrate her far-flung army for an attack on Germany. Great Britain also sent its army to aid France.
The main reason was entangling alliances; this is shown below.
The war started when a Serbian radical (Gavilo Princip) murdered the Archduke of Austria - Hungary (Franz Ferdinand) and his wife. This made Austria - Hungary declare war on Serbia. Serbia was allies with Russia so Russia declared war on Austria - Hungary. Russia was alliances with France and they would soon join in as well. Germany was allies with Austria - Hungary, so they joined in and went to attack France. In their attack, they invaded neutral Belgium which made Great Britain angry since they were alliances with Belgium. Italy used to be allied with Germany but they backed out and joined the allied powers. The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers (Germany and Austria - Hungary) just because.

The proximate cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austro-Hungary by Serbian separatists, which was taken to be an intolerable affront to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its allies in the Central Powers.

They were not invited. Countries are not invited to join. Countries must apply to join. So it was the Czech Republic's decision to apply and once their application was approved, they were able to join. They joined in May 2004.
