Lloyd Garrison led the abolitionist movement prior to and during the civil war via a publication that he edited. When the war ended and slavery was ended he closed up shop. By the way the true friends of the newly freed slaves were black people themselves and Quaker's. Abolitionists wanted the stigma of slavery ended but their concern of the freed slaves amounted to little.
