Er... 'cause it's the first world war there was... Answer #2 At the time, it was called "The Great War" because it was the largest war in history to that point. It didn't get the name World War 1 until after World War 2 started.

To differentiate it from the Second World War.

Most wars are not called a 'World War'. While there have been many wars, there have been only two World Wars.
