Near the end, Confederate soldiers were marching for days without food. Sherman was particularly hard on the south and was quoted saying, "This war differs from other wars, in this particular. We are not fighting armies but a hostile people, and must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war." Then of course, you have the lives of slaves which were never very nice. All in all, it was generally more pleasant to live in the north.
