In 1815, A wandering teacher came to live less than a half-mile from the Lincolns. His name was Hezekiah Riney. Abraham was six years old when he went to Hezekiah's school. Hezekiah could not add or subtract and he could not write. He claimed that he could read. Hezekiah did not teach reading, he taught manners. Manners were the main concern of parents and that is what Hezekiah taught for the two months Lincoln went to school.
Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln could not read or write and Thomas was not interested in Abraham getting an education. When Nancy died in 1818, Abraham's total schooling amounted to less than four months. Abraham was nine years old when his mother died and he could not read or write.
Two years later Thomas remarried. His new wife was Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln and she could not read or write. Sarah recognized Abraham's intellectual ability and encouraged him to go to school. From 12 to 14, Lincoln began to learn to read. At fourteen he took up reading in earnest.
