It is unfortunate that only some of the language and culture of most tribes have been preserved. The US Government policy, backed by religions, have outlawed (forbidden or banned) many parts of the culture that they do not approve of; for instance the Sun Dance (a religious ceremony) was outlawed until 1976.

Few of, if any today understand the original cultures set aside from its blending with the immigrants that came here since 1492.

Traditional ways have been handed down behind closed doors for generations. Now their is a resurgents of young people who want to learn their languages and traditions. Native peoples are now authoring their own histories. Tribal schools are teaching their cultural histories. There are many museums who are striving to preserve not only the past, but the present history of the Native American
