In 2012, the popular vote was a bit closer, but President Obama still won it, defeating his challenger Mitt Romney. Some votes have still not been counted, but as of the end of November 2012, the total was 62,049,770 for Barack Obama, and 58,757,388 for Mitt Romney.

The most popular US president is a difficult question. There are polls that base their results on numerous factors. One factor is "election results". Landslide election victories can sway the results. This puts Ronald Reagan and yes Richard Nixon on solid ground. Yet Nixon's demise rules him out.So it's clear that the timing of a poll will yield certain results.
The fact that Franklin D. Roosevelt won four terms, for example often places him in the top five or ten in popularity.

The other problem is based on the fact that many Americans simply lack the knowledge to make a solid choice. Clearly, most people and/or historians will always have George Washington in the top 10 or top 5.

There is also the opinion that assassinations play a role. This elevates John F. Kennedy, and Abraham Lincoln. The truth is most Americans cannot name another assassination victim, James Garfield, for example. Yet he was killed only months after his inauguration.

The idea that Lincoln "freed the slaves" is not exactly accurate. Yet he is given credit for that.

Another popular president is Thomas Jefferson, yet he fails to make the common currency test, as the $2 dollar bill no longer is printed.

The debate on the best or even the Top 10 remains elusive. LBJ was once immensely popular, yet the Vietnam War is a negative factor for him.

Who was the most popular president remains an open question that in fact is next to impossible to answer.
