In the early days, the animal skins or hides of deer, antelope, moose, and buffalo were used instead of cloth. The women prepared the hides, made and mended the clothes. Clothing was decorated with shells, claws, feathers, porcupine quills, and hair or strips of fur, and later, glass beads.

The Cree depended on the buffalo for their clothing. Men wore breechclout of leather, leggings, and a buffalo robe when it was cold. They had eagle feather bonnets for special ceremonies. Women wore a knee length leather dress often decorated with porcupine quills.
