Benjamin Banneker was the African-American mathematician and astronomer that helped to survey Washington D.C., In 1789 he was called on to assist George Ellicott and Pierce Charles L'Enfant in laying out what would become the nation's capital.
Benjamin Banneker was a free scientist, surveyor and almanac maker who corresponded with Jefferson on topics of slavery and racial equality. He challenged Jeffersonâ??s possible hypocrisy of writing a document that proclaimed freedom for all while keeping slaves. He also accused Jefferson of physically beating his slaves. Jefferson carried on a correspondence with Banneker that, while not addressing the accusations, expressed his desire for the advancement of Americaâ??s black people.
