There were two: The battle of Coral Sea stopped the IJN's advance towards Australia, and the battle of Midway stopped their advance everywhere else; because their offensive power was destroyed at Midway (offensive power=aircraft carrier pilots and deck crewmen/the planes & carriers could be replaced, but not the airmen).

Battle of Midway is where the Japan lost their best airmen and five aircraft carriers. The Battle of the Philippine Sea two years later in 1944 is where they lost the rest of their airmen and carriers.

It should be also mentioned that the Battle of Guadacanal was in 142 yet played a big role in bringing forth decisive battles later in the war.

The Battle of Midway was decisive. The Japanese lost 4 of it's Carriers and a large amount of it's most experience naval airmen. The Japanesereallylost the war at PearlHarborby attacking the USA which was the largestindustrialized country in the worldwith nearly twice Japans population andplentifulhome based raw materials as against Japan having very little. It was a forgone conclusion on 7th of December 1941. The Japanese mistook US resolve out of it's fanaticaldelusional beliefs in it's own strengths and it's disdain for other cultures
