1 - The land acquired from Mexico became New Mexico and Utah and the people of those two states could decide for themselves to be a free or slave state.

2 - California entered the union as a free state.

3 - The Republic of Texas gave up land in New Mexico in exchange for money to pay its debt to Mexico.

4 - Slave trade in the District of Columbia ended.

5 - The most onerous bill was the Fugitive Slave Act. It included a provision for a bounty on slaves who sought their freedom by escaping to the north and fines for anyone who refused to help the bounty hunters.
