Most pioneers used native timber to build their homes. However, in the plains states where timber was scarce, pioneers used grass turf called sod to build their homes. Such homes were called "soddies" because the house was built out of a little timber and a lot of living grass.

Log cabins and wood framed houses were the most common houses built by pioneers until they began settling on the great plains where trees were scarce. On the plains, they used sod to build dwellings until enough wood made it's way to them. By the end of the 19th century, wood frame, stone and brick dwellings had replaced log cabins and sod houses.
