Production went down around 90% using European farming systems. Native American systems used a Milpa type of planting system which produced around 30 million calories per acre, where European farming systems produced between 3 and 7.9 million calories per acre.

A "Milpa" or "Milpas" farming system is a way to grow multiple crops in the same space to benefit each type of plant, this type of system cannot use machines.

Wherever native peoples endured colonisation from the Europeans, there were always major impacts.

  • Disease: Europeans brought diseases to which the natives had no immunity. Influenza, smallpox, measles, and typhus fever were relatively harmless to the European settlers, but these diseases wiped out huge numbers of American Indians.
  • Not only did diseases cause a problem, but the introduction of new foods also caused problems. Foods containing wheat and sugar resulted in Heart disease and obesity among the native Americans.
  • Europeans seeds and plants which were brought to North America spread and took over native habitat. Not only did these lead to the extinction of some species of native flora, but the break in the food chain also affected the native animals of North America. This in turn upset the balance of plants and animals on which the native Americans relied for their food and other needs.
  • When the North Americans settlers took over land traditionally belonging to the native Americans, this meant the Indians were dispossessed of their own lands. For a culture that was linked inextricably to the land, it was a real tragedy to be separated from their spiritual roots. This sort of action led to a real loss of culture, spiritually and socially.
  • In many cases the native Americans were herded onto reserves, rather than permitted to freely hunt and wander around their traditional homelands. This loss of freedom and loss of land is a legacy still felt keenly by the people today. In some cases, they were forced to take on white man's religion as well, although they did have some choice.
  • There were massacres of the native people - widespread, unnecessary massacres of men, women and children, usually for absolutely no reason.

Well, the effect that colonies had on the Native Americans was that when the colonists came in, they took away the land of the Native Americans which forced the Native Americans to be homeless, go somewhere else, or get into war with the colonists.
