During the Civil Rights Movement and the desegregation of schools, nine African American students enrolled in Central High. The white students did not want to share their school with these nine African American students because of racial tensions.
I doubt that they were so much worried about nine black students, but rather about what might follow. The white people in Little Rock were afraid that more black students would follow and that their children would be in classes with blacks and maybe socialize with them and maybe even date them. There were also afraid that standards would drop - that black students would be weaker and be a bad academic influence.
There were only nine kids because, the were the smartest African Americans that got choosen to got to a white school.

Martin Luther King, Junior, believed in liberal arts education for African Americans. Before this, it was difficult or impossible for black students to get into good liberal arts colleges.
The FFA was for white students and the NFA was for African Americans because they had segregation back then.
