How did people get to the goldfields?

There were several ways they arrived in CA. One way was through wagon trains. There is one account about a traffic jam of wagons coming into the state of 10,000 wagons. That is hard to imagine, but it must have been wagon after wagon. Another way was by ship. They would take a ship into San Francisco bay and then go up the Sacramento River to Sacramento. Many times the ship was scuttled where it sat because the crew also decided to look for gold. Today, sometimes, one of these ships is found when a new building is built and they have to change the foundation of the old building. Trains also came into the state by the time the gold rush happened so they could go by train. Finally, they could ride in by horse.

There were routes to California, Isthmus of Panama, Around Cape Corn, and with a wagon. The Isthmus of Panama is the shortest. Wagon was dangerous because they would run out of food or supply easily, or because of the weather or the land (Donner Party). Around Cape Corn took 3-5 months.

After 1850 they were in the US so they "didn't travel from it". They came by wagon and some came by ship into San Francisco, caught a ship up the Sacramento River to the gold fields. People who came into CA before the gold rush would go to Sutters Fort in Sacramento.
