Increase democracy in US government.

A major goal of the progressive movement was to increase democracy in US government. This was achieved through such methods as amending the Constitution to allow for the direct election of U.S. Senators (17th Amendment) and giving women the right to vote (19th Amendment).

The opening slant on Progressivism is seriously jaundiced and boldly disingenuous. The Progressive and Marxist movements in America cooperatively joined hands in their common goal in the very early nineteen-hundreds:

Their vision: Federalist rule by supreme councils - unquestioned power in the hands of a select minority of influential's at the top - destruction of the nation's Constitution by crushing it; radically changing the national structure by stripping all power from big industrialist and big money managers, and replace them with a political syndicate of career operatives having common ambitions - i.e. the trade of one form of corruption and power abuse, for another.

The single significant distinction between a Progressive oligarchy and an America's constitutional republic is that in America the common working class has the freedom and ability to rise well above the norm in personal success and wealth.

Under a neo-Progressive Marxist oligarchy the rich and elite minority holding power will remain rich and powerful - while the general population will be required to make do through a system of redistribution, where those who make more must freely share with those having or making less, until a near even distribution of wealth and goods is achieved. This last condition is more readily identified with a Marxist state. By the nineteen-fifties however it had been endorsed by the more elitist American Progressive movement as well. RGH

The Progressive Movement (1900-1920) was basically a reform movement. The movement drew its ideals and inspiration from the writings of Thomas Jefferson and reform groups that had attracted some attention in the 19th Century. The progressives were successful in part because they were able to rally the better part of a generation to their ideas about reform. Many of their ideas were adopted by the two major parties. While not all progressives supported all progressive reforms, the basic objectives of the movement included the following:

Destruction of the monopolistic power of the major corporations and banks in America.

More representative government at all political levels in local, state, and national government.
