A day in the Mission began with prayers before the start of the work day. They worked until lunch time. Lunch was followed by a siesta, after which everyone returned to work. Work stopped at dinnertime, which was followed by evening prayers, free time and bed time.

Life at the Santa Barbara mission was difficult. The day began at 6 am when everyone was expected to participate in prayers for about an hour. Then they would eat a porridge like breakfast before beginning work for the day. Men were mainly sent out into the fields to work, and theÊwomen did domestic chores such as cleaning and cleaning. There was a lot of other work to be done such as taking care of animals, gardening, and making soap and candles. At noon they would have lunch, and then work for another few hours before dinner. After dinner, neophytes were permitted to rest for a few hours before going to bed.
