Many European nations established new colonies that expanded their power. Specifically, the expansion, or also termed Imperialism, was to gain Natural Resources. Along with is they created a market for its own products among the native peoples that lived in the newly acquired colony. Additionally, imperialism was intended to gain a military and economic advantage over other nations. The US also engaged in imperialism and made substantial gains such as controlling the Panama Canal. The canal was built by the US, however, it was imperialism that set up the opportunity for it.
