Speaker of the House of Representatives, Henry Clay, who came from the boarder state of Kentucky, mediated between the North and the South, concerning the territory of Missouri becoming a state.

From the Missouri Compromise, that became law in March of 1820:

Missouri became a slave state, and Maine would enter as a free state. In addition, the territory that remained from the Louisiana Purchase was divided in two along the line 36 degrees 30 minutes latitude.

With the exception of Missouri, slavery was prohibited in states north of that line.

New problems about the spread of slavery came up because the Missouri compromise stated that North of the Missouri line would be free and south would be slave up to the Rocky Mountains. What compromises did the government make leading up to the US Civil War?

There were a number of compromises made in the US leading up to the US Civil War. The list is as follows:1. In order to have the new US Constitution ratified, slavery was not slated for abolishment, but the importation of slaves would be illegal after 10 years. ( this was a hollow deal as slaves continued to be imported under cover) 2. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 to keep the balance of slave and free states equal; 3. The Missouri Compromise of 1850, this also to keep the slave-free state balance, but added the Fugitive Slave Law; and 4. The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowing citizens to vote on the slave issue when a territory had yet to apply for statehood.

What were the effects of The Missouri Compromise?

An uneasy 30-year peace, until the admission of California made it unworkable, and there had to be a new compromise, which did not hold up.
