Actually, it was not his decision. In fact, the change happened long after he died. Carter G. Woodson, a well-respected educator and historian, instituted what was then called "Negro History Week" in 1926. He died in 1950, and it was not until 1976 that the event was expanded into "Black History Month." The reason for the change had to do with advocacy on the part of prominent black educators. They believed the US Bicentennial Year was a good time to expand and enhance the teaching of black history and let a new generation of young people know about the contributions people of color had made to US history.
