Rhode Island was founded in 1636, Roger Williams, after being banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views. He settled at the tip of Narragansett Bay, on land granted to him by the Narragansett tribe. He called this site 'Providence' and declared it a place of religious freedom. Opponents of religious freedom sometimes referred to it as 'Rogue's Island' which later came to be Rhode Island. Due to the island's tolerance, the oldest surviving synagogue in North America, the Touro Synagogue was built and remains there.

Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, as well as his supporters, for religious freedom. Essentially, it was founded to offer settlers a separation of Church and State after disagreements in Massachusetts Bay.
