Ivan IV Vasilyevich (Ivan the Terrible) of Russia was born in 1530 and became the Grand Prince of Moscow when he was 3 years old, in 1533.

However, when he was 16, he was crowned as Tsar of All Russia, on January 16th, 1547, maintaining this position until his death 37 years later, on March 28th, 1584. He thus reigned as Tsar for 37 years, 2 months and a week or so.

It is worth noting that he is known as Ivan the Terriblein the English-speaking world because he was given the surname Grozny, which means mighty, powerful and strict, not cruel, horrible or inadequate.

Some writers have consequently and more appropriately translated his name 'Ivan Grozny' as Ivan the Awesome, rather than as Ivan the Awful!
