In one sense Jesus didn't have any challenges, if you mean challenge to be something difficult we face that we have to work hard to overcome or achieve by our own ability. As a true human being, Jesus relied every moment of his life on the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill his Father's plan. He did nothing in his own strength or by sheer will power - it was as the Father enabled him, by the power of the Holy Spirit. In this, he showed us what true human living is - a life of complete dependance on God; saying 'Father, not my will but yours be done'; knowing that everything we are and have comes as a sheer gift from the Father, and that 'He who calls us is faithful; he will surely do it' (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Yet at the same time, Jesus was confronted every day with 'challenges' in the sense of confrontations with people and events that flew in the face of Who he was and what he was doing. The Devil tried to tempt him to step aside form his mission; people came to him with demands that he meet their needs; he was faced with peoples' expectation that he would set up an earthly kingdom on the spot; the leaders of the day were constantly arguing with him and trying to trick him into saying something that would make him out to be a fake; sometimes people came to him with questions and expectations that were just plain dumb and ignorant. Jesus confronted a crowd of people who were misusing the Temple, and displayed divine, righteous anger; he became frustrated with those who always expected him to do a miracle, or with his disciples who continually failed to get the point, or with the religious leaders who constantly mistreated the poor, women, children and 'sinners'. His greatest 'challenge' (in this second sense of the word) thought was when he faced the cross and all that involved. As the time approached, Jesus became 'deeply troubled in his spirit' (John 13:21) - yet in the next moment was able to say to his disciples ''Let not your hearts be troubled' (John 14:1)! At the cross Jesus bore the full weight of all of the righteous anger of God against our sin and rebellion. This was not just an 'objective' carrying of guilt, but in that moment (and the time leading up to it) Jesus also experienced the full Horror of human shame, remorse, hopelessness, fear and loathing. He would have had all the prideful, vengeful, malicious, angry, depressed, guilt-ridden thoughts that all human beings have thought pass through his mind and conscience. It is no wonder that it is said that he was unrecognizable - not just from his physical beatings, but also because of what all this experience of humanity's guilt would have done to him. We're told that even this was done in the power and enabling of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 9:14). Jesus didn't so much face the challenge, bolster up all his strength, and then push through to make it happen. He simply surrendered himself to the Father and to his Father's will. That's the key for us, too. I guess all the 'challenges' of Jesus' life kinda pale into insignificance in light of the challenge of the cross. So incredible is his love for us, that He did this for us!
