It depends on which country you are asking about. In much of Europe, the fashion for upper-class people was very different from what the lower classes wore. Artists who were wealthy and successful wore robes made from elegant fabrics; struggling artists probably dressed in a simpler style. Puffy sleeves were common for both men and women, and hats were also common for both genders. I enclose a link to an interesting essay about fashion in the 1500s: it discusses women first, and then men, and has pictures of the various styles back then.

Which country controlled America by the 1500s?

In the 1500s, the country that controlled what is now considered America was Spain. Spanish explorers like Christopher Columbus, HernΓ‘n CortΓ©s, and Francisco Pizarro played a significant role in the early colonization of the Americas during this time period. They established Spanish colonies in regions such as present-day Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Spain's control over the Americas lasted for several centuries until other European powers, such as England and France, began to establish their own colonies in the region. I hope this sheds some light on the history of America in the 1500s!
