Many in Newfoundland didn't want to join the confederation because they felt they had more independence by being part of the British Colonies. On the other hand, the British government was going to cut off financial help, and Canada was willing to pay the bills, so some thought joining the confederation was a good idea.

Many of the settlers thought that the powerful United States would want to expand northward into New Brunswick. However, if they were part of Canada they would be better able to defend against this threat.

People thought that Confederation would help the economy by providing a larger market for their goods, and a link to the other colonies through the Intercolonial Railway.

Fraud and Coercion. New Brunswick did not want to join Confederation and petitioned Queen Victoria to save them. She did not.

The people of New Brunswick voted against Confederation in 1865. In 1866 they voted for Pro-Confederation representatives under the agreement that they would get better terms. They did not. The promise of 1/3 of cabinet posts for the Maritime provinces as well as an equal elected senate never made it to the BNA act.

They joined because the elite found it to be profitable to them at the time.
