The same as in every other country that was part of one European empire or another. they were forced into an industrialised world without the advantage of undergoing an industrial revolution. so that when the English finally left they left a country that had a broken political system. especially when taking into account the Pakistan debacle.

Some also say that the biggest change was that 50% are tramps.

Great Britain conquered India and killed many of their people. In my opinion Britain was worse for India than Germany for Europe, because they conquered India only for the money!

............................................................................................................................................

India was one of the richest countries till the time of British rule in the early 17th Century . Britain developed India for its own benifit they build road for themself not for Indian people . on April 13, 1919 (which happened to be 'Baisakhi' one of Punjab's largest religious festivals) fifty British Indian Army soldiers, under the command of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, opened fire on an unarmed gathering of innocent men, women and children without any reason and killed nearly 4000 people . that is why Hitler was far far better then britishers.i have taken this very small example to Illustrate this, britisher were more cruel than Hitler .

1. Took all the wealth (diamonds, gold, etc).

2. Spoiled the culture.

3. Were very cruel.

4. Made the tax prices very costly.

They basically ruined India if the British hadn't conquered India, India would be richer than China.

The British Raj was bad in many ways. First, the people in India lost many skills. Indian workers only did what Britain forced them to, and so they didn't get to learn new things and benefit. They only stuck to one task. Second, India lost a lot of it's abundant supply of Natural Resources and wealth to Britain. After the Sepoy Mutiny, Great Britain ended its indirect control of India through the British East India Trading Company and started its direct ruling. The people of India lost their freedoms. Great Britain also slowed India down economically.

Who started the british empire?

Officially such a thing as the British empire never existed. It was just a term given to the various collection of areas Britain dominated. The only actual 'real' empire Britain got involved in was India, the Indian Empire being founded in 1858.The first English colonies and so the British empire as it is commonly known were founded in the late 16th/early 17th century but most of these early attempts failed. The first permanent and lasting colony was Jamestown in 1607. So that's as good a date as any....However these were just English colonies, Britain itself wasn't founded until 1707.So there's your answer there. 1707.

Which countries did not benefit from the British empire?

European countries in general benefited from the British Empire because they like the British empire were hell bent on looting whatever they could out of Asia the Americas and Africa. this ended up leading to a period where piracy was greatly reduced by the British navy to everyones benefit but the slaves that made up the slave trade the Chinese drug addicts that were the result of the British governments opium trade and all the poor saps all over the world that were being enslaved by the well armed Europeans.

Why was it dangerous to take a stand against the british?

Because at that time, Britain had the largest empire in the world, and were very disciplined. They also had an EXTREMELY well trained army (redcoats). They had stopped lots of revolts like in in India. The only reason America won the Revolution was because Britain was small so they had to rise taxes in all their countries, but they weren't large enough to train enough men to defeat the whole of America.

Why was Hong Kong important to the british empire?

China supplied Britian with tea. From its base in India the East India Company led the expansion of the British Empire in Asia. As well as working with the Royal Navy to oust Napoleon from Egypt, capture Java from the Netherlands, aquire Singapore 1819, defeat of Burma 1826, the East India Co.was making great profits out of the opium export trade to China. These illegal activites took place from approx 1730's and went some way to redress or reverse the imbalances in trade which were a result of the British imports of tea. This saw large amounts of silver flooding into China from Britain. In 1839 a large amount of opium was cofiscated by the Chinese authorities. This led Britain to attack China in what became known as the First Opium War, and British seizure of Hong Kong.
