As might be expected, there was a strict social hierarchy in 17th century Europe. The top position was held by the nobility. The next level would be gentry followed by farmers. Occupying the bottom stations would be laborers, tenant farmers and craftsmen.

The three primary classes were the peasants, the bourgeoise, and the aristocrats.

Bourgeoisie, peasants and aristocrats are no terms that were used in England, these are terms used across Europe, but especially France.
