The French started colonizing territories of North America in the 16th Century. They established settlements and forts in the places that later would become cities as Montreal and Quebec in Canada and as Baton, Rouge, Green Bay, Detroit and New Orleans in the US. They arrived to the New World for the first time in 1524 and in the following years they tried to found settlements in several parts of the continent, but almost all of them were short-lived.

I think that through all the arguments and the evidence proven, that the Vikings by far were the first to have discovered the America's. They may not have done it intently but there is evidence proving that the Vikings were there centuries before Columbus.
