Unitary System - This is a system where the central government has all the power and very little power is given to the subunits. Countries like Japan and France practice this type. Confederation - This is a loose association of states, where very little power is held in the central government. There are very little states which operate under this sort of system. Then you have Federal - US, Mexico, India and Canada operate under this system. Here we have the central government and the subunits (the states) share power. Nigeria's Independence was granted on october 1 1960. However the privy court(london) was still the apex court until october 1 1963 when Nigeria became a full-fledged republic. By January 1996, Nigeria had begun its long path through military coups, counter-coups, handovers to civilians, and the circle again. In 1999, the Nigerian military handed over power to civilians again...and presidential democracy has remained till date.
