Lincoln wasn't even officially on the ballot in several Southern states (at the time, people didn't vote directly for a specific person for president; instead they voted for a particular elector pledged to vote for that candidate, and in several states, nobody wanted to publicly associate themselves with Lincoln, so there were no electors pledged to him).
