No, there is no esential genetic tie, but all humans are related.

Well sometimes it depends on where you come from Some names were given according to your family occupation. Smith = blacksmith, Mason = brickmason. I live in a small farm community and there are families here with the same last name that swear they are not related.

Not always. It depends on where the person or his ancestors acquired their last names. For instance five people with the last name Smith may or may not be related, as follows.

Person 1: ancestor was a blacksmith who acquired that surname as a result.

Person 2: ancestor was the same blacksmith.

Person 3: ancestor was a different blacksmith that acquired the surname.

Person 4: ancestor changed his name to Smith from another difficult to write or

pronounce surname to fit into society.

Person 5: ancestor changed his name to hide his original identity.

As you can see in these examples only person 1 and person 2 are related. Persons 3, 4, and 5 are not related to anyone in this example.

It's definitely possible, but it doesn't automatically mean that you are related. Over the years, last names have been altered or changed. Some last names originally were used to describe jobs(which is why there are last names like Baker, Porter, Thatcher, etc.), not family. If you want to find out more about your family tree, I suggest going to a genealogy website by searching "family tree" or something like that on Google.

They might be relatives if your name is uncommon or their ancestors came from the same town as yours. However, if you have a common name, like Smith, most people who have the same last name as you are not your relatives. To figure out whether you are related, you will have to compare your ancestors and see if any were the same people.
