The Battle of Yorktown took place from 5 April 1862 to 4 May 1862 in York County and Newport News, Virginia. The results were inconclusive. The battle combatants were the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. The commanders were George B McClennan for the US and John B Magruder and Joseph E Johnston for the Confederacy. The battle took place near the 1781 siege of Yorktown, the final battle of the American Revolutionary War. Actually, it was from September 28th to October 19th, 1781 in Virginia. George Washington commanded this battle. The French were on the Americans side against the british. There were approximately 8,800 Americans, 7,800 French and 6,000 British. It was important because the Americans won. This was the battle where Cornwallis surrendered over 8,000 British troops to George Washington. It was also the battle that ended the Revolutionary War.
The war was not officially over until the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which took place on September 3, 1783. April 19, 1783 saw publication of Thomas Paine's "American Crisis," which was influential in it's own right. However, Congress did not ratify the book, nor any other matter related to the official ending of the war in April.
