The American Revolution started in 1776. We first had the Articles of Confederation which was a very weak government. The Articles of Confederation was in effect from 1781 until 1788. In 1788, the Articles of Confederation were thrown out and James Madison "fathered" the United States Constitution.. This went into effect in 1788 after being ratified by 9 of the 13 states. In 1791, the Bill of Rights were introduced as compromises to the Constitution.

The number of years the Constitution has been in effect as of 2011 is 223.

(2011-1788= 223)
