General Morgan, was the commander for the American Army, and General Tarleton, was the commander for the British Army. The Americans had about 70 that were dead or wounded. The cause of the Battle of Kings Mountain was Robert Ferguson's loyalist group threatening residents of Kings Mountain. He was trying to acquire loyalists and said that people who did swear their allegiance to the king would be killed. The mountain people responded by killing Ferguson and several of his loyalists.

This US Civil War battle was part of Union General Sherman's western march attacking Georgia. It was a tough campaign and at Kennesaw Mountain, the Union lost an offensive battle to the South. Confederate General Joseph Johnston repulsed a Sherman advance. Johnston's fortifications were too strong for Sherman's assaults.
As Union General Sherman was marching into Georgia with the goal of capturing Atlanta, he had an a significant troop advantage. Because of this he believed he could an offensive operation against the Confederate troops under the command of Joseph Johnston. Sherman made the mistake of trying an assault on the fortified positions Johnston had taken at Kennesaw Mountain. The result was a defeat.

That setback made Sherman turning back to a campaign of manoever in order to exploit his superiority in numbers and arms to destroy the Confederate Army. The Battle of Kenesaw Mountain didn't interfere with Sherman's March to the Sea because it had not been planned yet at the time when the battle took place.
Kennesaw Mountain was the only major battle that Sherman lost while an army commander. As a subordinate General, he had taken bad losses in a number of skirmishes. And his capture of Atlanta actually represented a failure to destroy the Army of Tennessee - arguably a defeat. That army was of course routed later by George Thomas, technically under Sherman's command, though Sherman was deep in Georgia by then, and incommunicado because the telegraph lines had been cut.
Union General Charles Garrison Harker graduated from West Point in 1858. He was ranked 16th in a graduating class of 27 cadets. Harker saw most of his US Civil War action in the Western Theater. He was killed in 1864 at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the Atlanta campaign. In this battle, General Sherman made the error of conducting a frontal assault on fortified positions of General Joseph Johnston.
