After the war ended he helped draw up the US Constitution which was truly remarkable and then make it work by serving as the first President.
He had the opportunity to make himself king and to set up the kind of Dictatorship that is so common in the world whenever a new strong man gets power, but he not only insisted on a Constitutional government but refused to accept more than two terms as president before stepping aside.
