The land of what is now known as Colombia was actually inhabited for nearly 20,000 years before the Spanish "discovered" it. The coast of Colombia, as well as Venezuela and Panama, were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and named by him. Alonso de Ojeda was the first to explore inland, and the first European cities were founded in Colombia in 1525 and 1533.
