Many immigrants searched for settlements that were made up of people from their original countries. These settlements would contain schools that taught the traditional lessons and knowledge that the immigrants brought to the country. Other immigrants would teach their children in their homes.

Immigrants went to school in America because the law came to require all children to go to school. Older immigrants went to school because, as a free country, doing so could not be forbidden if they could find the time and a school to take them, and because they expected to be better able to get ahead if they did.
