The Battle of Yorktown, taking place in the fall of 1781 and resulting in an American victory over the British, affected the course of American history quite profoundly. While a defeat at Yorktown may not have ended American hopes for independence, the victory there did in fact result directly (if not immediately) in independence. Everything that followed in American history to this day, both good and bad, may thus be safely said to have been caused by the victory at Yorktown.
